Wall Street - Rags to Riches

Wall Street and rags to riches stories have always fascinated me. Why, I do not know but when I visited New York city, actually just standing in Wall Street was definitely one of the highlights of my visit.

Following is a list of eight people who arrived to success in Wall Street, against the odds.

This is just a short outline, the full report can be read via the link just below the following list.

  1. Phil Falcone, the youngest of nine children, grew up poor in a small home in Chisholm, Minnesota. His father was a utility superintendent and his mother worked at a factory.
  2. Lloyd Blankfein was born in the Bronx and grew up in Brooklyn where he shared a bedroom with his grandmother. (Interesting comment on the report here … “Lloyd Blankfein knows the value of hard work so much….that he hired his son to work at Goldman Sachs with him?”
  3. Glenn Dubin, co-founder and CEO of Highbridge Capital Management, grew up in Washington Heights in Manhattan.
  4. Jon Corzine grew up on a small family farm in Illinois. His father was a taxi driver who later worked in manufacturing and his mother was a hospital administrator.
  5. Corzine grew up on a small family farm in Illinois. His father farmed the land and sold insurance and his mother taught elementary school.
  6. Soros’ was born in Budapest and grew up in a Jewish household. His father was a writer. He grew up during the rise of Nazi Germany. In the comments, it states that “Soros childhood reads like something from a disturbing Hollywood movie script. As a boy he outed Jewish families hiding from the Nazi’s.” How true that is would depend on researching his background.
  7. Leon Cooperman grew up in the South Bronx and his father was a plumber.
  8. T. Boone Pickens grew up in Oklahoma during the Great Depression era and later moved to Texas with his family. He went to and graduated from Oklahoma A and M (now Oklahoma state) and since donated a gazillion dollars for their football stadium.
  9. Gary Gensler, the chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, grew up in a working-class home in Baltimore, Maryland. His father was a cigarette and pinball machine vendor for local bars.

Those cases are just from Wall Street – yet around the world today there are many such stories of people reaching the peak in business from a life beginning with struggles, either the individual struggles or by watching the struggles of their parents. Rags to riches stories can inspire others to follow their dreams.

Sadly not all stories related to rags to riches have a positive ending!
